Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service

Station History

Elmswell has had a fire engine since 1926. This was a steam engine presented by Messrs Green King and Sons and was housed at the rear of the Fox Hotel. It was later relocated to Crown Mill in the old mill yard.

In 1938, the brigade was taken over and the steamer replaced with an open bodied motor fire tender with a Merryweather pump. In order to accommodate the new vehicle the fire station was moved to the Albatross Garage (opposite the Mace store). The present fire station was built in 1957.

Over the past 47 years Elmswell has seen many changes in both appliances and personnel. The present applicance arrived on station in 2003 and is an up to date appliance, with many few features, (you've probably all heard the new tones!!).
